Health & Dental Plan

UTMSU Health & Dental Plan

About UTMSU’s Health and Dental

UTMSU provides affordable and comprehensive health and dental coverage to all full-time undergraduate students at the University of Toronto Mississauga campus. The health and dental plans are provided through Green Shield Canada, the only national not-for-profit insurance provider in Canada with the support of the National Student Health Network.

Full-time UTM undergraduate students are automatically enrolled in the UTMSU plan. Depending on your registration, the plan provides extended health and dental coverage for up to 12 months, from September 1 to August 31, annually. The plans cover medical expenses that are not covered by the provincial government, therefore, they are supplementary to coverage under OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) or UHIP (University Health Insurance Plan), not a substitute.

Please note: The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is only for those who do not have access to private dental insurance or coverage through a professional or student organization.

Your health and dental plans offer comprehensive benefits, ranging from drug, paramedical, dental, vision, travel, and accidental. If you are registered for both the Fall and Winter sessions of the academic year, you are covered from September 1 to August 31. If you are registered to begin your studies in the Winter session of the academic year, you are covered from January 1 to August 31.

Below is a summary of the coverage allocated to UTMSU members:

  • Health benefits: 90% coverage for prescriptions medication, $125 coverage for 25 appointments to a mental health professional, $30 coverage for 20 appointments to a massage therapist, speech therapist, naturopath or physiotherapist.
  • Vision benefits: $200 coverage for eye examination and/or prescription glasses/contacts.
  • Dental benefits: $800 for cleanings, dental x-rays, fillings, oral surgery.
  • Travel benefits: up to $5,000,000 in emergency insurance when on a 120 day trip.

To use your UTMSU health and dental plan, you need your Green Shield Canada Member ID Number (or insurance policy number). This number is comprised of “UTM”, your student number, and “-00” for the primary plan user (as in you).

For example: UTM1001234567-00. For additional family members and dependents added on the plan, the suffix may be “-01” or “-02”.

When visiting a health professional, you will provide them with your GSC Member ID number for direct billing. If direct billing is not possible you will be required to pay for the service in full and request a reimbursement from GSC. For claims that need reimbursements, they can be submitted online through your GreenShield Plus account. If you haven’t already, you’ll need to register your ID number UTMyourstudent#-00 and create a user account. Please see the brochure above for instructions on registering for an account.

Disclaimer, Blackout Period:

A blackout period primarily applies to all incoming students who were not registered under the UTMSU health and dental plans in the previous academic year. However, in some cases, upper-year students also experience blackout periods if they deferred/paid their fees late.

During this period, you will not be able to access your benefit coverage and submit claims. Any health and dental services received during the blackout period can be resubmitted for claim reimbursement after the blackout period, as long as you remain a full-time student at UTM. The blackout period ends shortly after the UTM confirms your academic enrollment.

  • Blackout Period for Fall and Winter session students: Approximately between September 1, 2025 – November 13, 2025 (These dates may vary)
  • Blackout Period for Winter only session students: Approximately between January 1, 2026 – March 9, 2026 (These dates may vary)

The Association of Part-time Undergraduate Students’ (APUS) provides affordable health and dental coverage to part-time students across all three campuses of the University of Toronto.

Depending on your registration, the plans provide extended health and dental coverage for up to 12 months, from September 1 to August 31 annually. The plans cover medical expenses that are not covered by provincial or other health insurance. The plans are supplementary to coverage under OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) or UHIP (University Health Insurance Plan), not a substitute. Through the health and dental plans, we do our best to provide coverage to address our members’ common health needs. Our health and dental plans are provided through Green Shield Canada, the only national not-for-profit insurance provider in Canada.

Your GreenShield Canada Member ID will be as follows: APUstudentnumber-00

Please visit the APUS website to view the brochure and policy booklet: apus.ca/health/ or contact services@apus.ca for more help.

The University of Toronto Graduate Students (UTGSU) Health and Dental Plan provides students with unique health benefits. The Plan was designed to provide many important services and cover expenses such as prescription drugs, health practitioners, medical equipment, and travel health coverage, which are not covered by a basic health-care plan (i.e. OHIP) or the equivalent (such as UHIP for international students). Unfortunately, a large number of students do not have access to affordable extended insurance through employers. Student health plans are designed to provide this access and eliminate barriers to affordable health care.

Your GreenShield Canada Member ID will be as follows: GSUstudentnumber-00.

Please visit the UTGSU website for the brochure and policy booklet: utgsu.ca/health-and-dental/ or contact health@utgsu.ca for more help.

How To Use The UTMSU Health and Dental Plan:

  • Direct Billing: Some health and dental providers may be able to submit claims electronically on your behalf. In this case, provide them with your policy number and they can send a claim to the insurance provider for the amount covered by the plan. You will then only need to pay the remaining balance upfront.
  • Online Claims: When health and dental providers are unable to directly bill on your behalf, they will have you pay for your treatment out-of-pocket in full. If this happens, you may submit eligible claims for reimbursement online at Green Shield Canada+ account. Your GSC+ Account is where you can manage your UTMSU health and dental benefits plan! By creating an online account and submitting claims electronically you are eligible to get your money back faster. Your online account is self-serve and will allow you to review your claims history, check coverage, print personalized benefit ID cards, and more.
  • Student Centre: The Green Shield Canada Student Centre is your resource for your health and dental benefit plans.

Any UTM student who has alternate, comparable health and dental plans may choose to coordinate benefits. This allows you to use your UTMSU health and dental plans with any other health coverage that you may have. If you do not wish to coordinate benefits, you may opt-out of the plan.

You will be contacted by GSC if you have any mistakes in your application, and they require extra information from you. The summary email is NOT a confirmation that you are approved for a refund.

You will receive an email from health@utmsu.ca when your application has been approved and a refund is ready at the end of each semester.

When to expect your Health and Dental refund?
  • Fall semester refunds usually occur in December-January via e-transfer, if approved.

I am an international student. What is UHIP?

The University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) is the primary health care coverage for international students studying in Ontario, since they do not qualify for OHIP. This plan covers basic health insurance costs, such as visiting a doctor, visiting a hospital emergency room, and certain laboratory tests. International students must be enrolled in UHIP to have primary care health benefits.

International students use UHIP alongside the UTMSU members’ health and dental plans under GreenShield Canada – which are supplementary care benefits. You can contact the International Education Centre (IEC) to inquire about your enrollment into the UHIP program.

To learn more about UHIP, please visit their website here. You can also contact international.utm@utoronto.ca for more help.

I am considering gender transition. Can my health plan help cover the costs?

While traditional benefit plans address some components of the gender transition journey, we firmly believe that they fall short of covering the scope of transition needs. GreenShield’s offering steps in to help reimburse expenses that are above and beyond typical plan designs. Equally, the offering helps to fill the gaps tied to services not covered under your provincial or territorial government health care plans.

Learn more about coverage on gender transition here.

For benefit questions or claims inquiries, please contact Green Shield Canada. Log in to your GreenShield Plus account or download the GSC Plus app, or call Greenshield Canada customer service at 1-888-525-PLUS (7587).
