UTMSU provides affordable and comprehensive health and dental coverage to full-time students at the University of Toronto Mississauga campus. Depending on your registration, the plans provide extended health and dental coverage for up to 12 months, from September 1 to August 31 annually. The plans cover medical expenses that are not covered by provincial or other health insurance. The plans are supplementary to coverage under OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) or UHIP (University Health Insurance Plan), not a substitute. Full-time undergraduate students are automatically enrolled in the plan. Through the health and dental plans, the UTMSU strives to provide coverage to address members’ common health needs. The health and dental plans are provided through Green Shield Canada, the only national not-for-profit insurance provider in Canada with support of the National Student Health Network.
Your health & dental plans offer comprehensive benefits, ranging from drug, paramedical, dental, vision, trip, and accidental.

The plan coverage runs for up to one-year (September 1 to August 31) maximum.
If you are registered for both the Fall and Winter sessions of the academic year, you are covered from September 1, 2019 to August 31, 2020.
If you are registered to begin your studies in the Winter session of the academic year, you are covered from January 1, 2019 to August 31, 2020.
To use your UTMSU health and dental plans, you will need your Green Shield Canada ID Number (or insurance policy number). This number is comprised of “UTM”, your student number, and “-00” for the primary plan user (as in you). For example: UTM1001234567-00. For additional family members and dependents added on the plan, the suffix may be “-01” or “-02”.
Some health and dental providers may be able to submit claims electronically on your behalf. In this case, provide them with your policy number and they can send a claim to the insurance provider for the amount covered by the plan. You will then only need to pay the remaining balance upfront.
You may submit eligible claims online at Green Shield Canada Plan Member Online Services. By creating an online account and submitting claims electronically you are eligible to get your money back faster. Your online account is self-serve and you will be able to review your claims history. For more information about Plan Member Online Services, check out: Student Claims.

What about OHIP+?
OHIP+ is a program for residents of Ontario that provides coverage for many common prescription medications. The Government of Ontario amended the original OHIP+ program so that students without health & dental benefit plan coverage are eligible for the program. OHIP+ is not comparable alternative coverage that can be used to opt out of the UTMSU health & dental plans as it does not cover dental, paramedical, vision, trip, or accident claims.
I am an international student, what is UHIP?
UHIP (University Health Insurance Plan) is primary care health coverage for international students studying in Ontario. This plan covers basic health insurance costs, such as visiting a doctor or a hospital emergency room. International students must be enrolled in UHIP to have primary care health benefits. International students use UHIP with the UTMSU Members’ Health & Dental plans (which are supplementary care benefits) to be able to access prescription medications, paramedical services, dental benefits, vision benefits, trip coverage, and accident benefits.
